TOEFL iBT 2027 — Complete Guide to the New Format and Scoring

⚠️ The TOEFL iBT changed fundamentally on 21 January 2026.
If you are preparing with materials published before that date, you are studying for a test that no longer exists. This guide is fully updated.
Quick Answer: The TOEFL iBT is ETS's academic English test. Since 21 January 2026 it runs 90 minutes (down from three hours), is scored on a 1-6 band scale in half-point increments aligned to CEFR (replacing 0-120), and the overall score is the average of the four sections — not their sum. Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive, Writing was cut to 23 minutes with new practical tasks, and results arrive within 3 days. UAE universities accept it as an approved alternative to IELTS. Scores remain valid for two years.

Transition period through 2028

Between 2026 and 2028, your score report displays three figures together: the new 1-6 band, the comparable 0-120 score, and your CEFR level. After 2028, only the 1-6 band remains.

How Scoring Works Now

The core rule: overall = the average, rounded to the nearest half band.

Section Score
Reading 5.5
Listening 5.0
Writing 5.0
Speaking 5.5
Average 21 ÷ 4 = 5.25 → 5.5

What each band means

Band CEFR Meaning
6.0 C2 Near-native mastery
5.0-5.5 C1 Advanced — highly selective universities
4.0-4.5 B2 Solid — most degree programmes
3.0-3.5 B1 Intermediate — may require a language programme

Approximate conversion

New band ≈ Old scale
5.0 ~95+
4.5 ~85-94
4.0 ~72-84
3.5 ~60-71
📌 These are indicative. The only authoritative reference is the official ETS concordance table — check it before applying.

The Four Sections

Reading — now adaptive

Dense academic passages (history, biology, astronomy). No prior knowledge required — every answer is in the text. Question difficulty now adjusts to your performance in real time.

  • A strong start matters most — early performance sets your difficulty path and score ceiling
  • Hard questions are a good sign, not a failure signal
  • Key types: vocabulary in context, inference, sentence insertion

Listening — also adaptive

University lectures and campus conversations, played once with no advance sight of the questions. Note-taking is the entire skill of this section.

  • Build a personal shorthand system (cause →, example = ex, professor's opinion = !)
  • Track structure, not just facts: why is this being said now?
  • Campus conversations are easier than lectures — bank them

Writing — the biggest change

Cut to 23 minutes, with the focus shifted from long academic essays to concise practical communication. Tasks now include sentence building and email writing alongside the academic discussion task carried over from the previous format.

⚠️ Memorised essay templates no longer work. The new format rewards precision, brevity and function — not rhetorical padding.

Speaking — fastest to improve

Recorded tasks on the computer — no human interviewer. A real advantage for students who find live interviews intimidating. Because its structure is relatively fixed, it responds to systematic practice faster than any other section.

  • Record yourself daily and listen back — you will hear filler and pauses you never notice while speaking
  • Silence costs more than a grammatical slip — keep talking
  • Never memorise scripted answers; raters detect them

What Adaptive Testing Means for You

Principle Practical implication
Early accuracy is critical Your opening performance shapes the whole section
Difficulty signals success Harder questions mean you are doing well
Pacing beats perfection Never sink time into a single item
Old practice tests mislead Use only ETS materials published after Jan 2026

TOEFL Scores for UAE Universities

Target Old scale ≈ New band
NYU Abu Dhabi / MBZUAI 100+ ~5.0-5.5
Khalifa University / AUS ~90-91 ~4.5-5.0
Most national universities 79-80 ~4.0-4.5
Certificate equivalency 61+ ~3.5
⚠️ Essential step: ask your university's admissions office directly — "What is your required score on the new 1-6 TOEFL scale?" Many institutions are still updating their thresholds.

Preparation Timeline

Current level Target Realistic timeline
Beginner 4.0 4-6 months
3.0-3.5 4.0 8-10 weeks
4.0 4.5-5.0 8-12 weeks
4.5 5.0-5.5 10-14 weeks
Any level +0.5 band 5-7 weeks
💡 A strategic point most guides miss: because the overall score is now an average, lifting your weakest section from 4.0 to 5.0 raises your total by 0.25 — the same gain as improving an already-strong section, but with far less effort. Always target the weakest.

  • We guide you step by step — we review your details before you confirm. One mismatch in your name can bar you from the test hall.

Test centres operate in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain and elsewhere. A Home Edition exists under strict technical conditions — confirm your university accepts it before booking.

FAQ

Are my old 0-120 scores still valid?

Yes — scores are valid for two years from your test date regardless of the scale change, and institutions accept them during the transition.

Is the test easier now?

No. The reporting scale and format changed; the English proficiency required for a given level did not.

Do old practice materials still work?

No — ETS explicitly advises using only materials published after 21 January 2026.

TOEFL or IELTS?

Choose TOEFL if you type reasonably fast, prefer no live interview, and want a shorter test. Choose IELTS if you are stronger in live conversation or prefer a fixed, non-adaptive format. UAE universities accept both.

How soon do results arrive?

Within about 3 days — significantly faster than before.
